After a collision you may hear from more than one insurance company. This page is general education only and is not legal advice about how to respond.
Know who is contacting you
- Which company the caller works for
- Whether they represent your policy or another driver's
- The caller's name, direct number, and claim number
Keep a communication log
- Date and time of each call
- Who called and which company
- What was requested and what you provided
- Any deadline you were given
Common requests
Insurers commonly ask for a statement, photographs, repair estimates, or authorization to obtain records. Whether and how to respond is a decision for you, and one many people prefer to discuss with an attorney first.
Keep everything in writing where you can
Email creates its own record. When something is agreed by phone, a short follow-up email summarizing it keeps your file accurate.
Were you injured in a motor vehicle accident?
If you choose to, you can request to be contacted by a participating attorney who handles motor-vehicle accident matters. We are not a law firm and do not provide legal advice.
