What to Do Immediately After a Car Accident

1. Address immediate safety

• Check whether anyone in your vehicle appears hurt before you get out.
• If it is safe and your vehicle is drivable, move it out of active traffic lanes.
• Turn on hazard lights so approaching drivers can see the scene.
• Call emergency services if anyone may be injured or the roadway is blocked.

2. Accept medical evaluation if it is offered

Some accident injuries are not obvious right away. Many people choose to be evaluated by a medical professional even when they feel able to walk away from the scene. That is a personal health decision, not something this site can advise on.

3. Document what happened

• Photograph all vehicles involved from several angles, including wide shots that show position.
• Photograph the roadway, signage, traffic signals, skid marks, and weather conditions.
• Exchange names, phone numbers, insurance company names, and policy holder names.
• Write down the responding agency and any report or incident number provided.
• Ask witnesses for a name and phone number before they leave.

4. Keep your own records

A single folder or phone album that holds photos, receipts, correspondence, and notes about dates and conversations is easier to work with later than scattered messages.
